Analytics signals vs. noise: why clean analytics matter
In analytics, the 'signal' versus 'noise' concept means distinguishing meaningful information (signal) from random variation (noise).
The signal is the information that helps you understand your audience: what they are interested in, how they navigate on your website, and what encourages them to take action. The noise is everything else, it analyses activity that (over)fills your reports but does not help to answer those questions.
The more noise in your analytics, the harder it becomes to see the real signal. And that noise is mostly coming from bot traffic. Read here if you want to know which metrics are affected and how.
More than half of the internet will have bot traffic in 2026. Research and reports has shown some different numbers. The Thales 2026 report states that 53% of internet traffic is made up of bots. The Imperva 2025 report claims 37% is the percentage of bad bots traffic and a report from Cloudflare suggests that 60% of traffic is coming from bots.
Imagine trying to listen to a conversation in a crowded room. The conversation is the signal, the background chatter is the noise. The more background noise there is, the harder it is to hear what is important.
Website analytics works in much the same way
The goal is not to collect more data. It's to make the important data easier to see.
Filtering is about clarity, not smaller numbers.
Most analytics platforms already remove known bot traffic, and that's an important first step. But bots aren't the only source of noise. (reference: Snoobi & Bot Traffic).
Not every visit tells a story
When we look at website traffic, it is easy to assume that every visit represents a potential customer, partner, or stakeholder.
But in reality, websites are visited by much more than people and organizations.
Search engine crawlers, automated bots, uptime monitoring services, internal teams, agencies, AI scrapers and other organizations all generate traffic on your site.
Part of this activity is both legitimate and necessary. But it is certainly not relevant when you are trying to understand how real visitors use your website.
If all of the incoming traffic is measured and presented in exactly the same way, the picture quickly becomes blurred and your insight is based on wrong assumptions.
Better decisions start with better data
Website analytics should help answer simple questions:
- Which content is valuable?
- Which campaigns are working?
- Where do visitors lose interest?
- How can we improve the user experience?
These decisions are only as good as the data and metrics that are used.
Many organizations also receive regular visits from their own employees, agencies, technology partners, internet service providers, or other known organizations. Depending on your reporting goals, these visits may also be worth separating from your audience data.
By filtering or classifying this traffic, analytics become more representative of the usage by organizations you are actually trying to understand.
The result is not fewer insights. It is about better and clearer ones.
Good analytics are not just reporting the highest number of visits. They are about showing you how you can understand meaningful behaviour.
This creates a much clearer picture of how your website is performing and gives marketing, communications, and digital teams greater confidence in the decisions they make.

The Snoobi approach: zoom in to the signal
At Snoobi, we believe that website analytics should reflect real visitor behaviour. Not just every request made to a web server.
That is why Snoobi Analytics automatically filters out known bot traffic and enables organizations to further reduce noise by filtering visits from specific internet service providers or classify visits from other organizations.
In the upcoming release of Snoobi Analytics that is scheduled for late this summer we will provide web site owners with additional tools and guidelines to segment the traffic to the website in more meaningful ways so they can filter unwanted visits but at the same time maintain a global overview of all visits.
Snoobi's objective is not to make visitor numbers look smaller.
It is to make the insights more meaningful.
Because when you reduce the noise, the signal becomes much easier to see and provide insight. And that is where better decisions begin.
