Snoobi privacy policy

Our objective is to monitor the Internet websites of our customers as accurately as possible, while being committed to respecting the privacy of Internet users. We operate in full accordance with the law and ethical principles.

The collection of information is subject to the Act on the Protection of Privacy in Electronic Communications. Ordered by the website owner, Snoobi is a value-added service as defined under this law. In addition to the Act on the Protection of Privacy in Electronic Communications, the operations of Snoobi customers may be subject to the Personal Data Act. In this case, the operations of SnooBI Ltd. are not subject to this law, because SnooBI Ltd. is not capable of associating the information collected with any natural person.

Snoobi collects information on visitors using a JavaScript installed on the monitored website. All the information collected is available to website administrators, hosting providers and other programs on the website. Snoobi collects the following information regarding website visitors:

  • IP address and the corresponding DNS name
  • Owner/registrant of the IP address (whois information)
  • Name and URL of the current page
  • Time of visit
  • URL of the previous page visited (referrer information)
  • Type, version and language of the visitor's browser
  • Resolution and colour depth of the visitor's display
  • The visitor’s operating system and its language
  • The visitor’s browser support for cookies and Java
  • The number of pages in the browser history

An IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to a computer when it is connected to the Internet, and it is needed for successful information delivery over the Internet. Each computer connected to the Internet has an individual IP address. IP addresses cannot be associated with an individual person using the computer, but it is possible to associate an IP address with the corresponding registrant organisation. If it so happens that an IP address can be associated with an individual person, this is due to deficiencies in web design that should be corrected to ensure data security. In such cases, contact your web administrator immediately.

Other information not related to IP addresses is collected from the browser by Snoobi using JavaScript. Browsers have been designed in such a way that it is impossible to access the visitor's personal information or files stored on their hard drive. Consequently, it is possible to collect only technical information about the system environment, which is used by the corresponding web administrators in website development.

Thanks to the referrer information collected, it is possible to determine whether the source of the visitor was a search engine, directory, advertisement or link, or whether the visitor accessed the website simply by typing the URL by hand. As far as search engines are concerned, it is also possible to determine the search phrase used and the page number of the corresponding result page.

With regard to web stores and other web services, Snoobi can also collect information provided by the administrator on transactions concluded by visitors. However, the website administrator may not store any personal information on the visitor. The following information relating to various transactions such as orders and registrations may be stored:

  • Transaction type (e.g. purchase, registration, document download)
  • Amount of order, number of items ordered
  • Order number

SnooBI Ltd. is not able to use the information collected to associate the visitor with a natural person. However, the Snoobi client (the owner of the monitored website) may associate the information with a natural person, provided the visitor has entered his/her personal information on the website.

The information collected by Snoobi Ltd. is confidential and can only be passed on to the corresponding Snoobi client who owns the website. Internet users should remember that the website owner has the right to use the information collected for various purposes, such as direct marketing, which is subject to the Finnish Act on the Protection of Privacy in Electronic Communications (Section 7).

When information is collected, each visitor is assigned a unique ID number, which enables the system to recognise multiple clicks by the same visitor. The ID number is stored in a cookie in the visitor’s browser. Snoobi is not capable of associating ID numbers with individual persons. If desired, cookies can be turned off under browser preferences.

In normal circumstances, Internet users do not need to worry about data security in connection with Internet tracking. If a network is misconfigured and as a consequence an IP address can be associated with an individual person, this applies to all visits on any web page. In such cases, the network must be reconfigured - it is by no means enough to remove the associated information from Snoobi or corresponding tracking software. Network administrators and users are encouraged to check the DNS and whois information related to their IP addresses. Check your own whois record. View your whois-information »

Cookies are necessary for reliable monitoring. Since Internet tracking programs do not store any information that can be associated with a person in cookies, turning off cookies usually does not affect privacy protection but just complicates the use of web services. If desired, cookies can be turned off under browser security preferences.

In support of fair and ethically responsible policies, we encourage our customers to inform their website visitors of their tracking activities and their purposes. Since we wish to operate in an ethically responsible manner, we provide all Internet users with the opportunity to remain outside the scope of Snoobi tracking activities. This means that in such cases no information on visits will be stored in the Snoobi system. However, it is possible that such information will be stored in the servers of the website administrator or other tracking systems.

Click here if you do not want Snoobi to store any information on your visits. A cookie installed on your server will prevent this in the future. If you remove cookies at some point or use other computers for surfing the Internet, you will need to click on the link again.
